I have a question! Maybe you know...I asked my doctor if the herpes could be on my mouth too...since I reciprocated the oral in most, but not all, cases. She said if it was on my mouth, it would just be a cold sore, so not to worry about it. I don't have any cold sores though. Since she said it'd just be a cold sore though, does this mean I have type 1?
I probably won't be able to get tested to find out type 1 or 2 for a while because I'm out of state, for school. So if anyone has any thoughts, please share :)

Once HSV (herpes simplex virus) infects your body in once place, that is where you will remain infected, in that family of nerves.
Although type 1 is usually thought of as being oral ("cold sores") type 1 can also infect the genital area. If that is where you are infected with it, you will not also become infected with it on your mouth. It is impossible for the same virus to infect someone twice. (However, do be careful if and when you have open sores, because those can be spread to any part of your body if you touch them and then touch somewhere else.)
If someone already has HSV1 orally, they will not be able to also get it genitally (that's at least 60% of the population.)
HSV type 2 on the other hand is almost always genital and very rarely spreads to someone's mouth, it usually stays below the waist. In the few reported cases of someone getting HSV2 orally, (10 in the entire history of the 10 years of the westover heights clinic) it never recurs and never sheds to anyone else.
